Types of media and their functions.

Introduction
Day after another, the media is becoming more important. There are an increasing number of people who turn away from print media; and are focusing their attention on broadcast and digital media. Media is a vital tool that can be used to promote brands by making people aware of their existance, educating people about them and changing people's perception and behaviour towards them, ultimately building and sustaining relationships.

Different forms of media
Forms of media can be classified as print, broadcast and digital media. Print media includes: newspapers and magazines; broadcast media includes: television and radio; while digital media are Facebook and Twitter. The benefit of using media is that it is fast and reaches masses of people in different locations.

Brands that use media successfully
Some of the brands that have stayed strong due to the correct use of media are Coke and Heineken. These brands have made use of one of the most important form of media today, which is social media. It is a strong form of medium because it offers organisations the opportunity to speak directly to stakeholders; and offers immediate feedback.

Who can use the media?
Anyone who wants to send a message to masses of people and has the required budget and equipment to do so can use media, from organisations to a person who just wants to be heard.

Conclusively, media is very influential and can be used for different purposes; it has become a big part of our lives which would be very hard to continue living without. "Media," our new addiction :-).

    1. You took the words right out of my mouth Mr Mgwenya. In this world that we currently find ourselves in, it is very difficult and almost impossible for brands and organisations to continue existing without knowing what is currently happening around them; it has become easier to be aware of current events through media, now than it has ever been in the past.

  2. I agree with you Mr Shiburi, the old media is being substituted by the new social media. People and organisations do no longer rely on print media for information. One has to make sure that his/her organisation adapts to changes that are happening in the media. Goole + is dying, soon it will be Facebook and Twitter. New social networks will be invented.

    1. The feeling is mutual Mr Baloyi. Organisations have to adapt or parish; and we see a lot of organisations turning to social media such as Facebook and Twitter, reason being that these forms of media are highly interactive and offer organisations the opportunity to know their stakeholders individually. I, too, am looking foward to new inventions of digital media as you are, Mr Baloyi.

  5. i concur with all pertaining to the positive effects of media.i just think more can be done to spread the use and thus the benefits to other areas, rural based and others where the infiltration of technology is slow. for particular brands, whose targets are rural, perhaps this is an idea...

    1. I agree, media is for everyone and no one should be excluded. Just think of all the changes that social media could bring to rural areas if used by 80% of the people who live there. Something needs to be done.

    1. My point exactly, Mr Thusile. People like to walk around with their favourite stories and share them with everyone they meet, what better way to do that than to save the story on your phone (Facebook) than to carry a newspaper all day.

    1. None taken; but fact of the matter is that media is nothing to be taken for granted, as media has provided a platform for you and I to share our views on certain topics such as the ones we discus on 'these' blogs :-).

  8. New technology is introduced now and then, so to media because they are driven by tech. Well is a good think to be up graded recently but we shouldn't abandon traditional media because of the new introductions in the market.

    1. That is true, considering the fact that social media is not as effective on teaching writing and reading skills as traditional media such as newspapers and magazines. I also do not think that traditional media should fade out, but rather there be a balance between the two.

  9. I agree with Themba imagine if we abandon traditional media and we don’t even have books, newspapers, magazines and we read online, what do you think will happen o our eyes as computer screens are hard on the eyes.

  10. Valid point, as good as digital media is, it is still dangerous to our eyes and should be used to a minimal according to me. All in all, all media is important and has its specific role in our lives.

  11. I agree with you MR Shiburi, most of people these days they read news online where print media is no longer prefer by people for news. Digital media is taking over to the print news because you read news at your own time everywhere.

    1. Definitely, Mr Maluleke. People want to digest news at their own time and at their own preferred locations, they also do not want to worry about their news getting wet or tearing apart like newspapers and magazines do.

    1. I also cannot imagine life without media, as it is part of the reason why the world has become so diverse and developed. It is a topic that cannot, and will never be taken for granted as it stands out on its own.
